Delegation Visits

Once or twice a year we visit the Jesuit Mission of Bachajón, the Center for Indigenous Rights (CEDIAC) and the Tseltal communities they serve. For nine or ten days, we immerse ourselves in the lives of the Tseltal People. We try to understand the sources of their struggles and joys, and share in solidarity with their journey to build a more just, humane and peaceful Chiapas. As we take in the breathtaking beauty of the mountains and jungles of northeastern Chiapas, we also step more deeply into relationship with the Tseltal People and the staffs of the Jesuit Mission and CEDIAC.

We generally build the itineraries for our delegations according to the interests of the participants. We spend some time taking in the sites, such as the Mayan ruins of Palenque and Toniná and the waterfalls of Agua Azul and Misol Ha.' We meet with community leaders who work in a variety of areas: nonviolent resolution of conflicts, restorative justice and human rights advocacy; public health and nutrition, women's literacy and leadership; education; the "autochthonous" church and indigenous spirituality; and sustainable development projects, including the organic coffee school, women's embroidery cooperative, and the demonstration farm in Chilón. We participate in traditional celebrations and observances that honor and strengthen Tseltal culture and spirituality. Often our stay includes visits to villages where we can spend time with Tseltal families and learn about their everyday lives. Participating on a delegation to Chiapas is not a "travel adventure" or a "vacation," but a journey of the heart.
